Vaccinations

Vaccinations protect animals against various diseases that can cause pain and distress, and that are often fatal.

We fulfil all your pet’s vaccinations here at Weardale Vets using Merial Vaccines.

Dogs

We recommend that you vaccinate dogs at 8 weeks and 12 weeks of age then continue with a yearly booster vaccination to maintain protection. This will safeguard against canine distemper, canine parvovirus, infectious canine hepatitis, leptospirosis and parainfluenza. Further information about these diseases and how vaccines work can be found in our ‘Pet Information’, ‘Dogs’ section of the website.

If your dog is going into kennels it will usually require a vaccination against kennel cough. This is a nasal vaccine given approximately two weeks before going into kennels.

Cats

We recommend vaccinating kittens at 9 weeks and 12 weeks and then follow up with a yearly booster vaccination. To give your cat the best protection available we recommend that you vaccinate against cat flu, feline infectious enteritis and feline leukaemia virus. Please see our ‘Pet Information’, ‘Cats and Kittens’ pages for more information on this subject.

Rabbits

We recommend vaccinating rabbits against myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease. These diseases are prevalent among the wild rabbit population and are easily transmitted to pet rabbits via  rabbit fleas, mosquitos and flies.

We can vaccinate rabbits from 5 weeks of age with a single combined vaccine.  A booster vaccination is then needed yearly.

Rabies Vaccines

We also offer rabies vaccines for pets travelling abroad as part of the Pet Passport scheme. This is a single vaccine with a two year booster. For further information on Pet Passports please see our ‘Pet Information’, ‘Travel’ section of the website.
